Nu Beta (U of Mississippi) Dedicates New Home

On Saturday, August 29, sisters, families, volunteers, university partners, and friends gathered in Oxford, Mississippi, to celebrate a special milestone for the Nu Beta Chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi: the dedication of its newly renovated chapter house at the University of Mississippi.

For Nu Beta, the occasion marked more than the completion of a renovation. It was a celebration of the chapter’s history, the many individuals who supported and invested in the project, and the generations of women who will continue to find friendship, leadership, and belonging within its walls.

The dedication ceremony featured remarks from AOII Properties Board President and Past International President Gayle Fitzpatrick, Nu Beta Chapter President Lauren Day, Campaign Co-Chair, International Historian, and Past International President and Nu Beta alumna Crystal Grafton Combs, and International President and Nu Beta alumna Susan Bonifield.

Together, the speakers reflected on the meaning of the newly renovated home and the enduring legacy of Nu Beta.

“Today, we celebrate much more than the dedication of a chapter house,” said Gayle. “It is a celebration of Nu Beta’s rich history, the generosity of those who invested in its future, and the remarkable women who will continue writing its story for generations to come.”

Established in 1958, Nu Beta has been home to thousands of women during their college years, providing a place where friendships are formed, leaders are developed, and lifelong connections begin. While the physical home has evolved, its purpose remains unchanged: creating a space where sisterhood can flourish.

The renovation was funded in part by many generous sisters and supporters who believed in the future of Nu Beta. Through the Our Home, Our Legacy campaign, donor support helped make the transformation possible. Crystal Grafton Combs, Campaign Co-Chair, reflected on the campaign’s journey and the commitment of the many sisters who helped bring the project to life.

“For those who have helped make today possible, thank you. Every dollar donated has helped offset the costs of construction, maintain competitive chapter dues, and support a reserve for repairs and maintenance,” Crystal shared.

“This day has been a long time coming. It is a day of celebration. There have been starts and stops, challenges and triumphs, along the way, but I believe we have achieved our goal. This house truly reflects the spirit of the women to now call it home.”

The renovation was designed to create a home that reflects the women of Nu Beta today: confident, ambitious, engaged, and committed to living lives of courage and connection. With design support from Abbe Fenimore of Studio Ten25 and architectural services from Treanor, the updated home features modern, refreshed spaces throughout the chapter house, creating inviting environments for studying, gathering, celebrating, and building community.

For current Nu Beta members, the renovated house represents the opportunity to create new memories while continuing traditions that began long before they arrived at Ole Miss.

“This house represents so much more than an address. It represents opportunity,” said Lauren. “It gives us spaces to study together, celebrate together, welcome new sisters, strengthen our leadership, and create traditions that future generations will inherit.”

She also reflected on the unique experience of her senior class, which was the final group recruited into the previous version of the chapter house. Over the past two years, Nu Beta members built their sisterhood without relying on a physical home, making the return to 544 Rebel Drive especially meaningful.

“We have spent the past two years building a sisterhood that doesn’t rely on four walls,” Lauren said. “This house gives us the space to create those moments, but it’s the women inside who make them unforgettable.”

That sentiment echoed throughout the dedication ceremony. From shared meals and late-night conversations to chapter meetings, recruitment celebrations, and the simple comfort of knowing a sister is nearby, the most meaningful moments of chapter life often happen in the spaces between the big events.

“While renovations can transform a building, they never change what matters most,” Bonifield said. “The heart of this house has always been its people. It is where lifelong friendships begin, where leaders are developed, where women discover their confidence, and where sisters become family.”

Bonifield’s own connection to Nu Beta made the moment especially meaningful. As a former member of the chapter, she reflected on the women who helped shape the person she is today, sharing the South African concept of Ubuntu: “I am, because we are.”

For Bonifield, the renovated home represents a new space for Nu Beta’s future, but the ambition that fills it is not new.

“These women are scientists and engineers, entrepreneurs and advocates, they are caregivers, artists and politicians,” Bonifield said. “They are women who will lead companies and classrooms and communities long after they’ve walked across a graduation stage.”

The dedication ceremony concluded with the official House Dedication Service, formally dedicating the home to the Nu Beta Chapter and the generations of women who will call it home in the years ahead. The celebration continued with self-guided tours of the renovated spaces, giving guests an opportunity to see the transformation firsthand and reconnect with sisters and friends.

With its newly renovated home, Nu Beta looks toward the future with the same spirit that has defined the chapter for generations—rooted in legacy, strengthened by sisterhood, and inspired by ambition.
