As many of our collegiate chapters prepare for another exciting and meaningful recruitment season, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the importance of the impact our collegians will have on thousands of women. Recruitment isn’t just about filling spots or finding people who look or sound a certain way. It’s about welcoming new women into our sisterhood who embody the values we hold close as AOII sisters.

Each of us joined AOII because we felt seen, accepted, and inspired. Someone looked at us and believed we belonged here. Now it’s time to do the same for the next generation of sisters.

So, what characteristics are important in choosing new members?

First and foremost, sincerity. AOII was founded on the idea that real, deep, and authentic relationships matter most. When you’re speaking with a potential new member, listen not just to what she says, but how she says it. Is she genuine? Is she engaged? Is she kind? It’s not about rehearsed answers—it’s about a real connection.

Second, look for potential, not perfection. Some PNMs may be nervous, or unsure of what to say. That’s okay—we’ve all been there. What matters is who she is at her core. Does she show compassion, curiosity, a willingness to grow? Remember, we’re not looking for the most polished person—we’re looking for someone who will flourish in our sisterhood and bring something meaningful to it.

Another thing to consider is shared values. Does she express a desire to give back, to lead, to be part of something bigger than herself? Whether through her commitment to academics, her passion for service, or her everyday actions, look for the values that align with our own: character, dignity, scholarship, and loyalty.

Also, remember to seek varied voices and experiences. A strong sisterhood is made up of individuals who bring different perspectives, talents, and stories to the table. Let’s welcome women who can help AOII grow and challenge others to think differently—because that’s how we continue to evolve as a chapter and as individuals.

Lastly, trust your heart. Recruitment can be overwhelming, but often that gut feeling is the most important thing. If a PNM feels like “home,” don’t ignore that. And if you see a spark in someone—even if she’s shy or quiet—speak up. Some of our most impactful sisters were once the quietest in the room.

Recruitment is more than matching letters—it’s about opening our doors, our arms, and our hearts. Let’s stay true to our purpose, supporting our collegiate chapters this recruitment season as they shape the future of AOII, one sister at a time.
